Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki has held a high-level meeting with road infrastructure contractors to address persistent delays and safety concerns on ongoing projects in the city.

The meeting, convened at the Mayor’s Parlor on Friday, brought together contractors implementing projects under the Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project (KCRRP), the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program (GKMA-UDP), Uganda Road Fund, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Also in attendance were KCCA Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi, Director of Engineering and Technical Services Eng. Justus Akankwasa, and Deputy Director of Roads and Drainage Eng. Maurice Kairania.

Buzeki expressed concern over slow progress and non-compliance on various sites and emphasized the need for immediate corrective measures.

“We are continue doing site visits and inspections to get the job done. Delays are unacceptable. Contractors who fail to meet deadlines should not be considered for future contracts,” she warned.

She called for improved safety standards, urging contractors to secure manholes, use caution tapes, and place warning notices to prevent accidents.

“It’s the rainy season we cannot afford to have open manholes or dusty roads. Pour water to control dust and ensure a safe environment for the people of Kampala,” Buzeki said.

The Executive Director further directed contractors to keep sites tidy and maintain professionalism in their work. “Be neat in your work. Serve the people of Kampala with dignity and urgency.”

During the meeting, contractors cited several challenges, including delays in the relocation of utility lines, which they say have hampered progress.

However, Buzeki assured them that the government has released funds for the current quarter and urged them to proceed with works immediately.

Buzeki emphasized the importance of addressing issues related to safety, environmental protection, traffic flow, and forward maintenance as critical components of infrastructure development in the city.
